I also analyzed the crap out of paintings by artists I like. I used the first two and bits and pieces from the other ones to learn all the basics (simplification, massing, repetition, value, color, etc), then I just did tons of studies (still do, constantly) and applied whatever I learned to original paintings. These are fantastic books that you should definitely read, but they're older and go more in depth on a lot of things, so some of the information may be a little overwhelming for a beginner.
